Physician associates help to provide continuity of care in medical specialities and general practice.

If you have a first degree in life or health sciences, this course could be the next step on your career path.

Learn to take patients’ histories, perform physical examinations, develop treatment plans, and interpret test results.

You’ll spend 50% of your time on placement in GP surgeries, hospital wards and outpatient settings.

As the availability of placements is limited, this course is open to UK applicants only.

Careers

Prepare to work in NHS primary and acute healthcare services.

When you graduate, you’ll be eligible for nomination to the Physician Associate national certification exam. Only students who graduate from recognised UK courses can sit this exam.

Once you pass the exam, you’ll be able to register as a physician associate and practice in the UK.

You could work in general practice, emergency medicine, cardiology, surgery or other specialties.

Teaching and modules

Develop your clinical skills and learn to care for children and adults in a range of healthcare settings.

Your course includes modules that have been mapped and developed to General Medical Council (GMC) standards for curriculum.

Through these, you’ll gain an understanding of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal and neurological systems, haematology, paediatrics and more.

You’ll complete placements in a range of clinical specialty areas, building skills in consultation, assessment and team working. You’ll also carry out an NHS quality improvement project.

Facilities

Study in our state-of-the-art School of Medicine in Chelmsford.

It houses a mock hospital ward, a GP simulation suite including consultation rooms, and an Anatomy Centre.

In Year 1, you’ll take part in simulated skills work and practical workshops here, alongside lectures and tutorials. You’ll also go out on placement. In Year 2, you’ll spend most of your time on placement.
