If you have at least six months’ relevant work experience, this postgraduate degree will prepare you to become a registered social worker.
It’s a practical course featuring 170 days on placement. Your placements will cover statutory work, children’s services and adult services.
You’ll start by exploring theories and approaches to social work, and developing your practical skills ready for placement.
You may be eligible for an NHS Social Work Bursary while studying.
Our MA Social Work degree course is validated by Social Work England, so when you graduate, you’ll be eligible to apply to register as a social worker.

Whichever area interests you, this course will prepare you for your Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE).
Learn about professional social work practice, safeguarding and interventions – and practice your skills before you go on placement.
You’ll be assessed as ‘ready for direct practice’ before beginning your placements. In Year 1 you’ll spend 70 days on placement, followed by 100 days in Year 2. You’ll also continue with university-based study.
Your dissertation, completed in Year 2, is an opportunity to explore a topic of particular interest to you. We encourage you to take account of service users’ expertise and appreciate the importance of research in social work practice.
