Gavin is the Social Work Continuous Professional Development CPD Lead and works alongside local authorities, in promoting post-graduate education and training with a practice focus for rights, independence and inclusion. Gavin is Course Leader for the MSc Advanced Social Work and Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) courses.
Gavin began his social work career as a local authority Forensic (Mental Health) Social Worker in 2001 and went on to work in secure-hospital settings before broadening his experiences via positions in Early Intervention Services (Psychosis), Child Protection and Discharge Planning (Addenbrookes Hospital). His practice background is as a Local Authority Forensic (Mental Health) Social Worker and Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP). Gavin first joined ARU in 2009 on a part-time basis, before becoming a full-time academic in 2019.
Gavin's research focus is with the application of a novel metatheoretical framework (the Blended Theory Model). Initially researched via a Participatory Action Research project, the framework was assessed to promote knowledge, skills and abilities with the mapping, synthesizing and application of multiple theories across social work practice and education.
Gavin is a doctoral supervisor and welcomes requests for further information regarding doctoral study.
Gavin is Course Leader for the MSc Advanced Social Work, Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) and Practice Education, courses.
Gavin also teaches on other CPD-related modules, including the Mental Disorder, Incapacity & Wellbeing (pre-AMHP/pre-AMCP), Rights, Risk & Resolution and Diversity, Inclusion & Contemporary Practice modules.
