Human Performance, Wellbeing and Vision

Our multidisciplinary team advances human health, wellbeing, vision and performance through cutting‑edge research in exercise science, environmental physiology, motor control, psychology, vision science and youth sport.

Our internationally recognised work integrates scientific insight with real‑world application to deliver translational, evidence‑based solutions that help individuals live more healthily and perform better.

Our research group brings together a multidisciplinary team dedicated to advancing human health, wellbeing, vision and performance across the lifespan.

Our research spans exercise physiology, sport performance science, biomechanics, motor control, psychology, vision and behavioural science, creating a holistic approach to understanding how people move, perform, and thrive.

We explore how the body responds and adapts to exercise, fatigue, ageing, and clinical conditions, generating evidence that informs safer and more effective training, rehabilitation, and health‑promotion strategies.

Alongside this, our work investigates the optimisation of human performance in public, occupational and elite sport settings. We examine the cognitive and psychological factors underpinning motivation, adherence, skill development, and behaviour change, with a focus on supporting individuals to sustain positive lifestyle choices. We also investigate individuals' vision to improve classification, fairness and equality in sport for those with visual impairment.

Complementing these physiological, psychological and visual dimensions, our research considers the cultural and social dynamics that shape sport, physical activity, and identity, ensuring that our insights reflect the complexity of real‑world experiences.

Across all themes, the centre is committed to applied, impactful research that improves quality of life, whether through enhancing athletic performance and classification, supporting healthier ageing, or designing interventions that empower people to live well.

Through collaboration with communities, charities practitioners, and industry partners, we translate scientific knowledge into meaningful and impactful change.
