Support for students

If you’ve been affected by harassment or sexual misconduct, there’s plenty of support available both within ARU and outside the uni.

If you’d like to tell us what happened or if you want to access support, you can do so via our Report + Support tool. A trained member of staff will then talk to you about your reporting and support options.

Are you in immediate danger?

Get emergency help. If you are in immediate danger or seriously injured, call 999.

Find a safe space. If an incident has just happened, try and find somewhere that you feel safe. If you’re on campus and are scared or fearful you can contact Security using SafeZone, or by calling 01245 686666.

As well as our Counselling and Wellbeing Service, we have a specialist ARU Sexual Violence Advocacy Service (SVAS). The SVAS gives practical support and advocacy if you’ve experienced harassment and sexual misconduct, and they’ll help you stay safe during your studies.

If something has happened, there are a few different ways for you to let us know, but we recommend you use the Report and Support tool. It allows us to understand the incident and help you take the best next steps for support and reporting. We’ll talk through your options, including getting support, looking into what happened, and making sure you feel safe.

You can find more information about the SVAS service here: Sexual Violence Support

Our Counsellors and Mental Health Advisers will give you emotional support. If you feel that you would benefit from their support, please register with the service and book an initial consultation. You can find more information about the service here: Counselling and wellbeing support

The Students’ Union (SU) Advice service can provide you with independent, confidential and impartial support. They can help you navigate university processes and give you representation at meetings. To access support, please submit your enquiry online.

Our Chaplaincy is here for you no matter what your religion or belief is. You’re welcome to talk to them about anything that’s on your mind. They’re not counsellors or specialists but are good listeners and can offer you friendly support.

Our Reported Student Support Service (RSSS) will be here to support any student who has been formally or informally reported for incidents of harassment and/or sexual misconduct and violence.

Support will be available regardless of whether it’s a named formal report or not. The RSSS will provide both practical and emotional help with university processes and guidance on academic studies. They also offer a safe and non-judgmental space to explore any emotional challenges you're facing as a result.

We can also support you if you’re concerned about your own behaviour and want to access specialist support to address this.

This support will be available to you from the incident itself, right up to and past any formal or informal reporting process while you’re studying at ARU.

This service is being set up in the academic year 2025/26 and you can find more details here when this is launched. In the meantime if you have been reported for sexual misconduct or harassment, you can access comprehensive support from our Counselling and Wellbeing Team and the Student Union Advice Service.
