The Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Sport and Outdoor Activities has been developed in consultation with employers and professional bodies. It’s endorsed by the Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL), meaning its content is consistent with current industry practice. After successfully completing the course, you’ll be ready to work as an assistant outdoor activities instructor, or progress to Year 2 of the National Extended Diploma.
As a student at Writtle College, you’ll learn how to lead land- and water-based activities such as navigation, climbing mountain biking, archery, paddle-boarding and canoeing.
As part of the course, you'll complete a work placement of 30 hours. There's also the opportunity to work towards the YMCA Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing. During the course, you’ll study both mandatory and optional specialist units, helping you gain the underpinning knowledge needed to thrive in the Sport and Outdoor Activities sector. You’ll delve into the details or factors affecting the outdoor sector, as well as health, wellbeing and sport. There are a number of opportunities to develop key employability skills including self-management, communication, critical thinking and adaptability.

The Level 3 National Extended Diploma, endorsed by the Institute of Outdoor Learning, will prepare you for employment as an outdoor activities instructor.
Alternatively, you might decide to continue your studies. This qualification is equivalent to 1.5 A-levels and, when combined with other qualifications, prepares you for degree-level study. Writtle College is part of Anglia Ruskin University (ARU); you might choose to stay at ARU and study for a degree in sport.
