DIY Livery Yard

If you’re studying on one of our equine courses, or MVetPhys Veterinary Physiotherapy, our DIY Livery Yard lets you bring your horse to university.

Facilities

We offer a range of packages to suit you, across three separate stable blocks:

Whichever package you choose, you’ll have access to our Equine Training and Development Centre facilities outside of scheduled lessons. These include:

If your degree course involves riding, you can use your own horse during timetabled riding sessions.

DIY livery is available on an annual basis. Places are subject to availability, and you’ll need to re-book each academic year.

What are the daily costs?

DIY Livery Stable

These charges cover the DIY livery stable, plus use of the field and facilities. Hay, straw, and shavings are not included in the facilities element.

Equine Academy

These charges cover the Equine Academy stable, plus use of the field/sand pen and facilities. Hay, straw, and shavings are not included in the facilities element.

DIY Non-Ridden Working Livery (limited places)

With this option you receive a discounted stabling fee in return for allowing your horse to be used in non-ridden practical sessions. You retain full access to your horse at all times. The Horse Unit may use your horse for up to two practical sessions per day (Monday–Friday), with daily commitments agreed in advance with the Yard Managers.

These charges include a DIY livery stable, use of the field and facilities (excluding hay, straw, and shavings), plus:

Owner responsibility for costs

All costs remain the responsibility of the owner. This includes (but is not limited to) veterinary fees (reproductive or otherwise), farriery, worming, and preventative vaccinations. Invoices must be sent to and paid by the owner directly and must not be arranged via ARU.

Register your interest

As spaces are limited, we allocate livery packages on a strict first-come, first-served basis. To reserve a place or learn more, email [email protected] and [email protected]

You can find full details, including additional terms, in our Student Livery Guide 2026-27 and DIY Livery Agreement 2026-27.

How does turnout work?

All DIY livery is based on shared grass turnout via a rota system – no individual turnout is available. We use bark all-weather pens when grazing is closed due to ground conditions.

What facilities can I access?

You’ll have access to our Equine Training and Development Centre facilities outside of timetabled sessions. This includes all arenas, the oval walker, and on-campus hacking.

Can I bring my own bedding?

You are welcome to supply your own choice of bedding.

What hacking is available?

There is excellent hacking on campus and in the local area. We provide mapped routes for your convenience and safety.

I’m an international student. Can I still bring my horse?

You can bring your horse from overseas on the condition that they have a negative strangles blood test and current equine influenza vaccination. When they arrive here, we’ll need to isolate them for seven days to uphold our biosecurity standards.

My horse has stereotypies (e.g. crib biting) or displays challenging behaviours. Can I still bring them?

All new horses stay on an initial trial period.

While we welcome horses with stereotypies, they may not settle well due to the busy environment and restricted turnout.

For the safety of our students, we don’t accept horses who display dangerous or aggressive behaviours.

What is the minimum age for horses on DIY livery?

The minimum age is four years old.

Can I put my horse on full livery?

Horses are welcome to stay on DIY livery during holiday periods. We may be able to offer a full livery service during certain holiday periods, but you would need to arrange this with us in advance.

Is there anywhere to store my belongings?

We provide secure, locked tack rooms for stabling tack and equipment.
