Cambridge and the Miners' Strike 1984-85
In 1984, at the height of the Miners' Strike, the Cambridge Miners’ Support Group was twinned with mining communities in Nottinghamshire. It also supported miners and their families in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Abertillery in Wales.
These web pages form part of a major oral history project and archive documenting the experiences of those involved, including members of the support group as well as miners and their families.
The project was inspired by a screening of the feature film Pride at the Arts Picturehouse in Cambridge in September 2014. It aims to record and document experiences which would otherwise have been lost.
Resources include:
- a Witness Evening to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the support group; this featured a visual display and exhibition that can be used at conferences and local history events
- commemorative booklet produced jointly with the Cambridge and District Trades Council
- a small archive of primary documents held in ARU's University Library in Cambridge
- oral history interviews conducted with the families of striking miners and their supporters in Wales, London, Nottinghamshire, St Albans, and Cambridge
- accounts of the activities of Cambridge Miners' Support Group, and mining communities in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, South Wales, and Yorkshire.
