You’ll explore a holistic approach to animal husbandry by studying applied behaviour and welfare, breeding and animal health management.

We combine elements of practical animal management with scientific topics such as conservation genetics and animal health.

You’ll learn from subject-specialist staff, and benefit from extensive campus facilities. You'll get hands-on with a range of domesticated and captive animal species, as well as laboratory classes and field trips.

Careers

If you’re passionate about zoo animals and wildlife, and want to support their health and welfare, our Animal Science (Zoo and Wildlife Conservation) course is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to pursue a successful career.

Graduation doesn't have to be the end of your time with us. You might decide to at ARU and study for a Masters, such as our MSc Animal Welfare and Conservation or MSc Conservation Education and Engagement. Take advantage of our Alumni Scholarship and get 20% off your fees.

Teaching and modules

You’ll start by learning about the fundamentals of animal science, covering biology, biochemistry, ethics, and essential practical and professional skills.

In years 2 and 3, as well as continuing to build your knowledge in these areas, you’ll specialise in zoo and wildlife conservation by studying modules on zoo management and wildlife conservation skills and issues.

You’ll round off your degree with an independent research project – an opportunity to look closely at a relevant topic that interests you, develop your research and communication skills and demonstrate everything you’ve learned.

Modules are subject to change and availability, and may vary by location. If you have the choice of optional modules, these are indicated with a *.
