Background

Much of Javaid's work is with industrial collaborators where he has delivered projects of commercial value. As a testament to the quality of his research work and contribution to ARU’s ambitions, he won the Vice Chancellor’s Award in the Outstanding Research and Innovation Established Researcher category in November 2021.

Javaid is an Associate Professor of Digital Manufacturing and has a wealth of experience in characterising and analysing varied materials for product development. He has designed and developed several processes capable of manufacturing polymers, metals, and composites based on the techniques of additive manufacturing. Javaid’s current research focuses on interlacing existing manufacturing practices (subtractive, additive, and hybrid) with advanced robotics and development of functional digital twins of additive manufacturing systems for engineering applications.

Javaid was awarded a fully funded studentship for PhD studies from the School of Engineering and the Built Environment at ARU. He designed a new additive manufacturing process to technology readiness level 6 to produce metal/composite parts and was awarded his doctorate degree in 2016. Javaid was also awarded a Lancaster merit scholarship during his MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering Science/Mechatronics at the University of Southampton. For his MSc project, he designed a novel additive manufacturing mechanism to technology readiness level 7 to produce multiple material parts using a desktop-based 3D printer. Javaid was the recipient of the Pakistan Government’s merit scholarship during his undergraduate studies in Mechatronics & Control Engineering at the University of Engineering & Technology (Lahore, Pakistan). His final-year project was based on the design of a master-slave dexterous robotic hand.
