Final-year students at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) will present work ranging from playful “paw-trait” art to a performance piece exploring personal trauma at the 2026 Graduate Showcase.

The free public exhibition, opening on Thursday, 4 June, brings together projects by students from more than a dozen different creative courses including Fine Art, Music Production, Fashion Design, Digital Media Production, Graphic Design and Animation & Illustration.

The annual event showcases how students on ARU’s creative undergraduate programmes are combining industry-ready technical skills with storytelling to address a range of personal and social themes through their work.

For the Cambridge public, it offers visitors the chance to encounter fresh ideas and connect with a new wave of artists, writers, performers and designers who are set to shape the future of the creative industries when they graduate this summer.

A new addition this year is a Fashion Show staged in the soaring atrium of ARU’s Science Centre, with the catwalk giving the audience a 360-degree view of the students’ collections.

Much of the work will be displayed in and around ARU’s Ruskin Gallery, including a series of uplifting illustrations by BA (Hons) Illustration student Olena Konstantinova, whose humorous dog portraits are testament to her resilience and optimism.

“After abruptly leaving Ukraine back in 2022 and moving to the UK, I felt lost and had no idea what to do next, what to do with my future. This course gave me confidence in my work and hope that I can do what I love doing for work.

“I want to make people smile with my artwork – for it to be something fun to engage with and brighten their day. The best feedback I can get is seeing people smile and laugh while engaging with my work.”

BA (Hons) Fine Art student Natalia Rodriguez Romero meanwhile is presenting a powerful performance installation titled “Rupture”. The piece, displayed through video and physical exhibits, examines themes of sexism, grief and reproductive loss, focusing on how trauma can shape and restrict identity.

During the film performance, Natalia is inside a cage, her skin encased in a layer of brittle plaster. Thanks to the sound system, the noise of falling plaster is amplified, turning a silent mental struggle into a deep and unsettling experience for the audience.

“I am interested in the ‘husk’ – the brittle architecture we build to survive, which eventually becomes the very thing that stifles our growth.

“This project is an invitation to witness the moment protection becomes a prison, and the terrifying, beautiful effort required to break free from one’s own calcified history.”
