International Community Experience (ICE) programmes are open to current students, staff and ARU alumni.
You can be studying any course or working in any area or academic discipline. You don't need previous experience of volunteering.
One of the greatest strengths of ICE programmes is the different perspectives, experiences and skills that volunteers bring with them.
Your background might be in health, education, business, science, policing, psychology, the arts, technology or another field. What's important is the personal qualities you can bring to the team and the communities we work with. These include:
This programme is built on collaboration, shared learning and mutual respect, so you should be prepared to work with the community rather than simply seeking to 'help' it.
Taking part in an ICE programme can be a unique, potentially life-changing experience.
You'll gain a deeper understanding of issues surrounding sustainability, inequality, education, health and community development.
Personal growth and ethical engagement are a central part of the ICE experience, so you should feel comfortable engaging in reflective activities.
We'll encourage you to reflect on how your knowledge, skills, values and experiences can help to support more sustainable and equitable futures.
ICE programmes are likely to challenge and stretch you beyond your usual physical, social and emotional comfort zones.
You may encounter unfamiliar environments, language barriers, different cultural norms and emotionally challenging situations associated with poverty and inequality.
As a volunteer, you'll need to demonstrate resilience, adaptability, professionalism and a willingness to embrace uncertainty and personal growth.
