1. Tell us about yourself
My name is Nishan Rampersad. I'm a visionary leader from Trinidad and Tobago. I'm an intelligent, innovative and good-natured person who champions and empowers causes related to good governance.
An unsung hero of the University of the West Indies (UWI), highly experienced and globally aware, I wear many hats and have gained a breadth and depth of knowledge in IT and business. I’ve used my MBA skills to lead through influence, architect systems, shape an eco-friendly environment and more that resulted in reduced costs, revenue-generating potential and improved stakeholder experiences.
Much like the symbol of the Heron, I’ve patiently worked hard and smart and received good. In 2024, I was honoured to receive The UWI Principal Special Innovation Award for my innovative work on a Human Resources Promotion Tracking Solution.
Also, I'm an ardent learner of Japanese at UWI Centre for Language Learning. I participated in the 2024 Japanese Language Speech Contest, where I earned second place in Category II with my speech on how books, music and studies can deepen relations of Trinidad and Tobago and Japan.
Overall, I strive to build a better digital society.
2. What is your fondest memory of Anglia Ruskin University?
When I was applying for the MBA programme, I was hesitant to start such an undertaking. It felt like a daunting endeavour. However, by chance I met Nigel, who gave me a tour of the facilities while answering my questions and addressing my concerns. Evans also reviewed my CV and application and was very helpful in guiding me. Throughout the programme the entire staff were very supportive.
By taking that first step, I became more confident and even after graduating, I pursued additional studies.
3. What has been your favourite job?
I'd say it's when I'm most creative conceptualising and building something that someone will use and appreciate. So, listening to a stakeholder with an issue and giving my decisions and insights so we can arrive at an actionable decision that results in a usable deliverable.
Essentially, helping people with something I made is very satisfying.
4. In one word, how would you describe Anglia Ruskin University?
Uplifting.
ARU elevates you. Intellectually and helping to build your character to take you to the next level.
5. How did your time at ARU help you?
My time with ARU made me more aware of myself. It taught me to truly believe in myself and how I can be determined and focused. Also, I learned that when I believe in myself, I'm more likely to find others believe in me too. So, ARU shaped me into a more effective self-starter and highly motivated individual.
6. What did you love about your chosen course?
The variety of topics. The MBA really gave me a well-rounded foundation. Learning afterwards that the programme met the Chartered Management Institute criteria for membership was a big plus.
7. What advice would you give to current students as they’re preparing to graduate?
Cherish your time spent and relationships built at ARU. As you branch out into your different paths, make the effort to stay in touch.
8. What do you know now that you wish you had known whilst studying?
That focusing too much on one thing, like studying, can negatively affect other areas of life. Balance is key.
9. Who was the biggest influence on your career?
My family. They have been most supportive. During the ups and downs over the course of my career, I learned much from them, their experience and wisdom were invaluable.
10. What advice would you give your younger self?
Explore more. Do new things, go new places and talk to more people.
11. Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know.
I love to read great stories. Books can tickle our imagination in a way no other medium does.
12. What’s next?
Reflecting on my career journey so far, I'd love to work on complex, multidisciplinary and human-centred projects at scale that meaningfully contribute to positively impacting society. I'm currently doing a project proposal towards that goal. So, maybe a PhD, international work, collaborations or entrepreneurship. I'm open to opportunities and excited for the next chapter of my journey.
