Since 2020, Rashid and Gill have collectively trained 2,500 police officers and social care staff.
Rashid Begum OBE is a subject matter expert (SME) in so called honour-based abuse (HBA) and forced marriage, and has dedicated her professional and private life to ensuring that others at risk are protected, and have their voices heard.
As a SME, solicitor and former police officer and with over 12 years experience of working for the police service, she was seconded to Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (now Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue) to work on the first investigation into so called honour based violence policing across England and Wales.
Gillian Squires MBE joined West Midlands Police in 1992 and served 30 years before retiring in March this year. Gill is an experienced child abuse investigator, and specialised in Forced Marriage, Honour Based Abuse and Female Genital Mutilation in 2009, becoming a national expert in this area. Gill is passionate about these issues and now continues working with and supporting survivors to raise awareness, ensure the vulnerable are protected with the aim that ultimately these harmful practices end.
