Paediatric Critical Care Level 2

Paediatric critical care level 2, often referred to as high dependency care, describes patients requiring more detailed and complex observation, assessment and intervention. Healthcare practitioners involved in the care of critically sick children should be qualified in addressing the needs of this patient group.

If you’re a registered healthcare practitioner working with sick children, this module is for you. It’s all about developing the knowledge and skills you need to care for infants, children, and young people who require Level 1-2 critical care.

Develop your understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology behind acute illness in infants, children, and young people; carry out holistic assessments; and take appropriate action. You’ll provide safe, high-quality care and learn key clinical skills including medication management (eg use of vasoactive drugs) and preparing for safe inter- and intra-hospital transfers. You’ll also develop your expertise and confidence to manage high dependency paediatric patients while knowing when to seek additional support.

You’ll learn through a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and hands-on simulations using high-tech equipment. This is your chance to build confidence in both theory and practice.

In-person skills days take place at ARU in Cambridge.

This module is aligned to the Paediatric Critical Care Society’s education standards.

Assessment
You’ll be assessed via:

• an essay focussed on a critical evaluation of a paediatric patient requiring Level 2 critical care
• a clinical competency portfolio

You can take this module at Level 6 or Level 7.
