Get the knowledge, understanding and skills required to fell medium trees up to 760mm safely, to industry standards, in line with current legislation. This Level 3 Certificate of Competence is NPTC City & Guilds approved.

Who should attend?

The Level 3 Certificate of Competence is for individuals who operate chainsaws as part of their work in arboriculture, forestry or other industries and are competent in chainsaw maintenance, cross-cutting, felling and processing trees up to 380mm.

Entry requirements

This intensive practical course requires a good level of physical fitness and an ability to study written technical information.

You must already be competent in chainsaw maintenance, cross-cutting, felling and processing trees up to 380mm.

We are governed by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulations therefore the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be used before you can start the course.

Equipment list for felling over 380mm

  • Chainsaw with maximum guide bar 15 inch (insurance requirement, above this length is not acceptable)
  • Fuel & oil in approved container(s)
  • Filing kit, for sharpening
  • Saw tool kit
  • Felling lever; if possible
  • 3 x high lift wedges
  • Sledge hammer
  • Timber tongs/hook
  • Turning strap
  • Measuring aid
  • Winch 1.6 ton SWL or greater with appropriate strops (can be provided)

Personal protective equipment

  • Hard hat assembly - with ear defenders, mesh visor (or safety glasses conforming to EN166)
  • Chainsaw gloves
  • Chainsaw trousers - type C
  • Chainsaw boots
  • Personal first aid kit/ large wound dressing
  • Whistle
  • Wet weather clothing

All equipment and PPE must conform to relevant CE approvals and be in a serviceable condition.
