Over the next month, we’ll be profiling a different sports scholar each week to find out a bit more about them. These students, who combine their studies with high level sports performance, will be telling us about how they’ve been coping during a challenging year and their plans for the year ahead.
Name: Tom Grieve
Sport: Swimming
Course: BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Physical Education
Q. Hi Tom, have you been able to keep fit during the latest lockdown?
A. During lockdown (current & previous) I aim to train twice a day, either once in the morning and once in the evening or twice in the morning depending on my Uni schedule. These sessions include one session of cardio training (either running or cycling) and one session of either HIT (High Intensity Training) which is hosted live by my club (City of Cambridge Swimming Club) or weight training.
I am lucky enough to have a small range of weights and a spin bike available to me at home which has been very helpful during these times to keep fit. Being a sprinter in the pool, long cardio isn’t my favourite so I like to switch up my runs and do a variation of hills sprints and timed distance sprint running or sprints on the bike.
Q. What’s your top piece of advice for staying in good health during lockdown?
A. Consistency. Even if you exercise once or twice a week just be consistent and stick to a routine. Eat a balanced diet with a lot of healthy foods to help stay in shape. A lot about staying healthy and fit is about how you fuel yourself.
Q. What has been your personal sporting highlight of 2020?
A. As with everyone else my season was unfortunately cut short. At the beginning of 2020 I had the opportunity to race and train out in Dubai. I represented City of Cambridge Swimming Club at the Middle East Open & Junior Championships and managed to final in both the 100m breaststroke and 50m freestyle and just missed out in the 100m freestyle final. It was a great experience to race internationally and race new teams. After the championships we had a tough week-long training camp and I really enjoyed the experience of training away.
Q. Finally, what is your main sporting goal or thing you’re most looking forward to doing in 2021?
A. My main sporting goal is to qualify for the British Championships. Depending on when the Championships will be held my focus now and for the prolonged future is training and aiming for that.
