CEEUPS hosts participatory filmmaking project

CEEUPS' Social Sciences Research Laboratory (SSRL) recently hosted a workshop with female veterans, who learned how to film "talking head" interviews.

The project, led by Dr Hannah West and Dr Ilda Cuko, was designed to both test and demonstrate the feasibility of this creative research method with diverse participant groups. While we engaged female veterans in this instance, the approach and techniques developed are highly adaptable and applicable to a wide range of communities and research contexts.

The overall aim of the project was to capture and share the lessons learned from using participatory filmmaking within an academic research environment. The resulting “talking head” instructional film provides a practical, step-by-step guide for researchers who wish to adopt this method in the SSRL. It walks users through the entire process – including how to engage participants, plan and structure the sessions, set up filming equipment, conduct the shoot, and edit the final output.
