Marcel has over twenty years of international experience in practicing and teaching architecture. In Brazil, he was involved in the governmental project “Favela-Bairro” to deliver infrastructure as well as housing to inner-city slums. He has worked for well-known practices in the UK such as Farrells, HLM Architects and Tibbalds Planning and Urban Design, and he recently led a masterplan in the Mediterranean coast of France while working for Urbanica, a small practice in Paris.

Background

Whilst working in practice, Marcel was a Lecturer at the School of Architecture of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Assistant Professor of Unisuam School of Architecture, both important Schools of Architecture in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2014, Marcel became a PhD candidate at the COPPE/UFRJ School of Engineering and in 2015 he moved to the US to perform his PhD research as Visiting Scholar at Georgia Tech School of Architecture under the supervision of Professor George B. Johnston. At Georgia Tech, Marcel investigated the intersection of technology, design processes and professional practice. He was granted the tittle of Doctor of Science in July 2019 for the Thesis “Building Information Modeling in the Context of Architectural Practice”.

In parallel to his research at Georgia Tech, Marcel worked as a Lecturer at the School of Architecture of Kennesaw State University, a neighbouring school that also belongs to the State of Georgia.

Due to his international experience, Marcel is also interested in comparative studies among the planning processes in the UK, US, France and Brazil, focusing on social and political aspects.
