Background

Following on from his doctoral research exploring the impact of information and communications technology (ICT) on different organisational levels in the NHS, Dr Sánchez-Vázquez worked for Warwick Medical School on the SAFER (Support and Assessment for Fall Emergency Referrals) Study. Here, he explored the impact of Computerised Clinical Decision Support technology used by  NHS ambulance service personnel.

After Warwick Dr Sanchez-Vazquz moved to Cardiff University Medical School. He was part of a study exploring the organisational culture underpinning what we understand by excellent care vs abuse and neglect of NHS inpatients, and the mechanisms by which this can be measured or assessed.

Antonio's main research interests are in the adoption of new technologies into complex systems of human work activity, especially in large organisations such as public services.

Research interests
  • ICT in healthcare, HIT, HCI
  • Activity Theory and activity systems
  • Systems thinking and systems practice
  • CSCW
  • Technology innovations into and across complex organizational domains

Dr Sanchez-Vazquez’s main research interests are centred on the introduction and adoption of innovative new technologies and related processes into complex systems of human work activity, particularly in large public sector and health organisations. He is interested in the generation and application of whole systems models, making use of systems thinking and activity theory, as theoretical lenses to guide practice by enhancing representation and understanding of the context of the new technology within and across organisational boundaries, especially in the areas of Human commuter interaction (HCI), Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), Healthcare Information Systems (HIS), and Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) in general.

Areas of research supervision
  • One PhD supervision, research looking at mobile health apps for medical staff in Europe
Qualifications
  • PhD Information Systems (title: 'Developing Information Systems Technology Within NHS Wound Clinics: An Evaluation'), University of Glamorgan
  • MSc Software Engineering, University of Liverpool
  • BSc (Hons) Genetics, University of Leeds
