ARU Writtle opens unique grounds to the public
Charity open day on Sunday, 8 March is part of the National Garden Scheme
ARU Writtle students have organised a charity open day on Sunday, 8 March, allowing members of the public the opportunity to enjoy ARU Writtle’s spectacular campus.
The event is part of the National Garden Scheme (NGS), which has been funding nursing and health charities since 1927. Last year donations to its beneficiary charities totalled almost £3.9million.
BSc (Hons) Horticulture students have organised the ARU Writtle event, which will take place from 10am until 3.30pm at Anglia Ruskin University’s campus just outside Chelmsford.
Visitors will be able to stroll the informal lawns with naturalised bulbs and wildflowers, and see the campus’ large tree collection, mixed shrubs, herbaceous border, dry and Mediterranean borders and landscaped glasshouses.
The gardens at ARU Writtle are used as “outdoor classrooms” demonstrating many different features, styles and materials. The gardens, designed and built by students over many years, have been opening for the NGS since 1997.
ARU Writtle students will also be available throughout the day to offer help and answer any questions from visitors. There will also be plant sales, guided tours and exhibitions.
Third-year Horticulture student Cowsi Magol, who has helped organise the event, said:
“ARU Writtle is one of the longest serving participants of the NGS, and we are very proud of our campus and the contributions that our students have made to the gardens over the years.
“It is a unique and beautiful environment and I hope people will be encouraged to come along and see it for themselves.”
Entry on the day costs £5 for adults and children go free. For more information, visit ngs.org.uk
