A professor at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) has been appointed as a Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Essex.

Professor Michael Almond, Forces in Mind Trust Professor of Veterans and Families Studies at ARU, was recommended for the appointment by current Lord-Lieutenant Jennifer Tolhurst – who is the Queen’s representative in the county.

Professor Almond, a Reservist with the RAF, has been mobilised four times. He served on operations in the Gulf, twice as an aeromedical evacuation officer, and in Afghanistan as a physician in Camp Bastion.

He also sits on the Essex County Council Civilian Military Partnership Board and the Eastern Veterans Pension Advisory Committee, which aims to ensure the Armed Forces Covenant is delivered throughout East Anglia.

Professor Almond said:

“I am delighted to have been recommended for this Crown appointment by the Lord-Lieutenant of Essex to be one of her deputies and act on her behalf when required.

“I look forward to representing the Lord-Lieutenant at local ceremonies and official events when necessary and I particularly hope to do so in the realms of health, higher education and with the Reserve Forces and Cadets.”
