ARU enterprise programme is ranked 1st in the UK
National funding backs innovative ‘sprint’ helping students turn ideas into action
Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) has secured national recognition for its entrepreneurial innovation after one of its student enterprise programmes was ranked first in the UK.
The Edge, a six-week entrepreneurship “sprint” that is run by the Anglia Ruskin Enterprise Academy (AREA), topped the rankings for the Enterprise Educators UK (EEUK) Impact Fund 2026/27, and is one of only three projects nationwide that have been selected for funding.
The news comes shortly after ARU was shortlisted in the Outstanding Entrepreneurial University category at the Times Higher Education Awards.
The EEUK funding will support a research evaluation of The Edge, which is designed to help students move beyond simply having business ideas, but assist them in taking practical steps towards turning them into reality.
Students complete a series of structured online missions covering idea development, troubleshooting, AI-enabled prototyping, user research and pitching.
The students work at their own pace and retain control over their decisions and progress, while having access to mentor support when required.
Two cohorts have already completed the sprint, which has seen participants build prototypes using AI tools, carry out interviews with potential customers and deliver business pitches. Two companies incubated by The Edge have already been formally registered.
The funding will enable ARU to evaluate two further cohorts and examine how entrepreneurial confidence and practical business behaviours develop during the programme. The findings will then be used to create a toolkit that can be adopted by universities across the UK.
“Many students are excited by entrepreneurship, but maintaining momentum after that initial spark of interest can be challenging. The Edge has been designed to remove barriers and encourage action from day one.
“We have seen students test ideas, build prototypes, speak to real users and even launch businesses. Being ranked first in the UK by Enterprise Educators UK is fantastic recognition of ARU’s entrepreneurial culture and our commitment to helping students develop the confidence and skills to create opportunities for themselves and others.”
Professor Gary Packham, Pro Vice Chancellor for Student Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at ARUThe project reflects ARU’s wider commitment to enterprise and innovation, providing students with opportunities to develop skills increasingly sought by employers, including problem-solving, creativity, initiative and communication. In 2024, ARU became the first UK university to receive the prestigious Entrepreneurial University Award from the National Centre for Entrepreneurship in Education.
The research evaluation will run throughout the 2026/27 academic year, with results and the toolkit due to be shared with other higher education institutions later in 2027.
