Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) and global semiconductor and software design leader Arm have further strengthened their long-standing partnership with the opening of the ARU Arm AI Lab in Cambridge.

Made possible through a donation from Arm, whose headquarters are in the city, the new facility within the School of Computing and Information Science on ARU’s East Road campus includes powerful computers built on Arm.

The technology will enable researchers and engineers from both organisations to collaborate more closely on cutting-edge AI innovation.

Arm is currently co-funding a PhD student at ARU and will jointly work on further PhD projects. Alongside visiting Arm staff and ARU academics, the doctoral researchers will explore practical, real-world uses for AI, with an emphasis on applications that can deliver advances in healthcare and the life sciences sector.

The partnership’s close education links already see ARU deliver the distance learning Postgraduate Certificate in Embedded Computing on Arm. The qualification is supported by Arm Education and focuses on the skills needed to apply machine learning techniques across different industry contexts.

The University is a founding member of the Arm Semiconductor Education Alliance, launched in 2023 to help identify talent and develop the skills of those already working in the sector. The collaboration also includes industry projects set by Arm for final-year ARU students, along with placement opportunities within the company.

Professor Laurie Butler, Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at ARU, said:

“We value our strong relationship with Arm, and this new facility brings together ARU’s applied computing expertise with Arm’s formidable AI capabilities.

“The ARU Arm AI Lab will ensure our researchers and students have access to the most advanced technology available. It will see ARU academics working directly with Arm’s AI platforms and tools to address real world challenges, particularly in areas such as medical technology, where AI has enormous potential to improve lives.”

Shantu Roy, Vice President of Developer Relations and Customer Engagement at Arm, said:

“Cambridge has long been a global centre for innovation, and we are proud to expand our partnership with Anglia Ruskin University through the ARU Arm AI Lab. By bringing together academia and industry around the latest Arm AI technologies, we can accelerate research, support emerging talent, and drive innovation across the wider technology ecosystem.”
