The NIPE textbook in a pocket™ app is a training tool for institutions and individuals who carry out the Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE). It provides information on eye, heart, hip, testes and skin conditions in newborn infants.

The NIPE textbook in a pocket™ app ensures student midwives and healthcare practitioners are armed with all the information they need to be able to competently carry out the NIPE examination, including gaining knowledge about conditions they may not have come across while in clinical placements.
Practitioners using the app can screen for congenital abnormalities which if detected and treated early, can reduce adverse outcomes in the longer term.
Some neonatal conditions, such as congenital cataracts, can be rare and vary in appearance among different ethnic groups, and the app provides photo examples of the how these issues can appear in all babies, minimising the chances of a potential issue being missed, or healthy babies being unnecessarily referred to specialists.
The detailed information for systemic physical examination is helpfully structured to address important learning areas for each of the screening elements.
The NIPE textbook in a pocket™ app was originally developed by Senior Midwifery Lecturer, Lindsey Rose of ARU as a tool to support the training of student midwives at ARU. The app is now being used by universities and NHS Trusts across the UK. The app is also available on the app stores for qualified practitioners performing the newborn and infant physical examination worldwide to revise and update their skills.
