Astrobiology: The Possible Chemistry of Extra Terrestrial Life

Space Stars, Universe Background

Explore how life might evolve beyond Earth, from alien biochemistry to the search for life on distant worlds and moons.

Join us for a fascinating lecture exploring alternative forms of biochemistry and whether they could exist in non-earth environments, such as other moons and planets.

Professor Nick Pugh will describe how life may have evolved on earth, and could have evolved elsewhere. The talk will explore the essentials for life, such as solvents, molecular scaffolds, and energetics, and discuss how alternative biochemistry could potentially support life. Nick will speculate on places where life could exist, and what is currently being done to investigate extra-terrestrial life.

Designed for a general audience, this accessible and engaging lecture combines biochemistry, evolution, planetary science, and astrobiology to explore one of humanity's biggest questions: Are we alone in the universe?

Duration: 45 minutes.

Suitable for ages 10+.

This event is part of Chelmsford Science Festival 2026.
