Chelmsford Science Festival and Chelmsford For You are thrilled to join forces once again for October Half Term! This year, we’re combining the magic of science with the spellbinding theme of “The Witches of Chelmsford.”
Step into Chelmsford’s fascinating history of witch trials and folklore and discover how science can explain the mysteries behind the myths. Families can follow the city’s Witch Trail, uncovering the real science behind the moon, bubbling cauldrons, levitating broomsticks, and more. Hands-on activities will let young witches and wizards create their own “cauldron slime,” explore the chemistry of potions, and even try their hand at woodblock printing—blending creativity, history, and scientific discovery in one magical week.

Our Moon is the most prominent & special companion in Earth’s night sky. Step inside our 360 Dome and join us for a tour of some of the most frigid, violent & absolutely strange worlds in ‘Bizarre Moons’. But the Moon is not just a scientific wonder. For centuries, it has been a source of myth, magic, and mystery. Witches and folklore traditions have long been connected to the lunar cycle, from spells and rituals timed with the new and full moons to legends of transformation and power under moonlight.
Get ready to explore how the Moon inspires both science and superstition, knowledge and imagination. Perhaps we’ll see our closest cosmic neighbour in a whole new light.
