Lisa Cunningham

After deciding to change careers, Lisa took our blended BA (Hons) Primary Education Studies accelerated degree and now works full-time as a teacher.

How did studying at ARU help your career development?

ARU completely changed the direction of my career. I started as an LSA after being made redundant during Covid and I knew I wanted to teach but needed a degree to move forward. The blended course meant I could study while working full time in school and still support my family.

All the tutors had real experience in education, which made such a difference. They understood the realities of working in schools and always brought that into their teaching. Even though we weren’t on campus every week, they were always available, supportive and genuinely invested in helping us succeed.

I loved how relevant and current the course was. Everything linked directly to what I was doing in school. The tutors were incredibly supportive. I built amazing friendships with people who were all balancing similar things, work, family and studying.

Since graduating, I’ve secured a full time teaching role. It’s given me the qualifications and confidence to finally step into the career I always wanted.

Why did you choose ARU?

I chose ARU because the course was flexible and realistic for someone working full‑time with a busy family. I went to an open day and everyone was so helpful and friendly. The modules were exactly what I needed to make everything feel manageable and the blended learning meant I didn’t have to give up my job. I left that day thinking, maybe I can do this!

How well were you supported as a student?

Even though the course was blended, the facilities were brilliant. The online resources were easy to access and the library became my go to place every Saturday, the study pods were perfect for getting work done. Everything was set up to support people like me who are juggling work, family and study.

What’s the most valuable thing you took away from your education?

The tutors were knowledgeable, experienced and genuinely passionate about helping us progress. They brought real‑world insight from working in education and they always encouraged us, especially when things felt overwhelming. Their belief in me helped me to believe in myself.

Even though my course was blended, I have made amazing friends. We have a WhatsApp group, which we created during the first year, and it proved invaluable. Alongside the queries about deadlines and assignment content, we’d also share positive messages and funny jokes just to keep us motivated during the difficult times.

Did you always know that you would go to university and if not, what changed your mind?

After being made redundant, I didn’t know what direction to take. I never imagined I’d go to university, let alone graduate with a First. As a 44‑year‑old woman who didn’t always believe in herself, I’m proof that you can do it. Studying at ARU gave me confidence, purpose and a whole new career. I’ve grown so much, personally and professionally.

I’m proud of graduating with a First and having my family watch me walk across the stage at Chelmsford Cathedral. After balancing work, studying and running a busy home, that moment meant everything. It showed my children — and myself — that it’s never too late to start again.

What advice would you give to other people thinking of taking a blended or accelerated course?

All I can say is if you’re thinking about it, do it. Be realistic - it is hard. You do have to be dedicated, organised and you might have to say no to some things along the way.

But ARU gives you the support and tools to get through all the hurdles and dark days. It gave me the confidence, the qualification and the opportunities I needed to become a teacher and I honestly couldn’t recommend it more.
