Framed drawing showing 116 different shapes representing Ayeshah's father's walks

Ayesha claims student prize at prestigious drawing exhibition

We’re delighted to announce that MA Printmaking student Ayeshah Zolghadr won the Trinity Wharf Buoy 2020 Student Prize.

Ayeshah, who came through a selection process of more than 4,000 submissions to display her work at the exhibition, won the prize of £2000 for her work Circling the Square I, a piece representing the therapeutic walks taken by her father to gain control over his medical anxiety and ongoing stroke recovery. Her line drawing traces 116 of her father’s meditative walks around the square outside his home, originally recorded using running app Strava, to create an abstracted visual database of his various routes.

Living and working in London, Ayeshah’s work explores relationships and communication through repetitive action and is influenced by an architectural background, mathematical investigations and an interest in digital technologies. She has previously exhibited at a number of group exhibitions including Westminster Reference Library, London (2019); Golden Lane Estate, London (2019); and Transition, Online (2020).

The Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize is the foremost annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK. It was founded in 1994 by Anita Taylor and Paul Thomas as the Rexel Derwent Open Drawing Exhibition, and known as the Jerwood Drawing Prize from 2001 to 2017.

Our hearty congratulations go to Ayeshah for this success. We wish her many more in her future practice.
