Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth

Sustainable Development Goal 8 seeks to promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, productive employment and decent work for all.

Achieving this goal requires organisations to create opportunities for skills development, support fair employment practices, foster innovation and entrepreneurship, and contribute to resilient local and regional economies.

As an anchor institution in the East of England, ARU contributes to SDG 8 through teaching, research, partnerships and operational practices. We support students and learners to develop the knowledge, skills and experience needed to thrive in a changing labour market, while working closely with employers, public sector organisations and community partners to address regional skills challenges and promote inclusive economic growth. Through degree apprenticeships, employer-informed learning, enterprise education and workforce development initiatives, we help create pathways into skilled employment and lifelong learning.

ARU is also committed to providing a fair, inclusive and supportive working environment for its own staff. Through policies that promote equality, wellbeing, professional development and flexible working, we seek to create a workplace where colleagues can achieve their potential and contribute to the University's mission. Our commitment to responsible employment practices is complemented by a strong focus on sustainability, ensuring that economic development and organisational growth are delivered in ways that support people, communities and the environment.

Our research further contributes to SDG 8 by exploring themes such as workforce development, productivity, entrepreneurship, sustainability transitions, social value and economic resilience. Through collaboration with businesses, policymakers and communities, ARU generates evidence that informs decision-making and supports inclusive and sustainable economic development at local, national and international levels.

By combining education, innovation, partnership working and responsible employment practices, ARU is helping to create opportunities for individuals, strengthen regional economies and support the transition to a more inclusive, sustainable and prosperous future.

Research

At ARU, research across business, economics and the social sciences examines how work is changing and how organisations can combine productivity and innovation with human dignity, inclusion and wellbeing.

Learning and teaching

We embed employability, enterprise and professional development throughout the student experience, so our graduates are prepared for emerging industries and future workplaces.

Operations

Decent work begins with the employment practices we uphold in our own institution. We've been an accredited Living Wage Employer since November 2017, and publicly monitor inequalities in pay.

Partnerships, impact and outreach

We help connect people with opportunities through partnerships that support employability, entrepreneurship, skills development and regional growth.
