Reducing inequalities is central to ARU's mission as a university committed to widening opportunity, supporting social mobility and creating positive change in the communities we serve.
Sustainable Development Goal 10 recognises that inequalities based on income, ethnicity, disability, gender, age, geography and other characteristics continue to limit people's opportunities and life chances. Addressing these inequalities is essential if societies are to achieve sustainable and inclusive development.
At ARU, reducing inequalities means ensuring that people from all backgrounds can access education, participate fully in university life and realise their potential. As a university with a long-standing commitment to widening participation and civic engagement, we work to remove barriers faced by groups that are traditionally underrepresented in higher education and wider society. This includes supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds, minority ethnic communities, disabled students, care-experienced learners and other groups who may experience exclusion or discrimination.
Our contribution to SDG 10 extends beyond student access and support. Through research, teaching, community partnerships and institutional leadership, we work to address the root causes of inequality, improve opportunities for underrepresented groups and promote fairness, inclusion and social justice. This commitment has been recognised through achievements including our Institutional Silver Athena Swan Award, Race Equality Charter Bronze Award, and recognition as University of the Year at the UK Social Mobility Awards. Together, these initiatives reflect ARU's ambition to create a more equitable society in which everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
We address the structural causes of inequality by developing evidence-based solutions that promote social inclusion, improve health outcomes and increase access to services for underrepresented communities.
At ARU, reducing inequalities is embedded throughout the student journey, from widening participation and inclusive admissions to tailored support that enables students from all backgrounds to succeed.
We work to embed equality, diversity and inclusion across all aspects of university life, from governance and employment practices to student support, accessibility and campus culture.
We work with community organisations, local and national government, charities and public services to understand barriers to participation, improve access to services, and support people experiencing disadvantage or marginalisation.
