Goal 1: No poverty

Poverty remains one of the world’s most pressing global challenges, closely linked to inequality, access to education, and economic opportunity.

Universities play an important role in addressing these challenges through inclusive education, research, community engagement and institutional practices.

At ARU, tackling inequality and widening participation is a core part of our mission. We are committed to supporting individuals and communities facing disadvantage, and to ensuring that access to education and opportunity is not limited by background or circumstance.

Inclusivity and widening participation are at the heart of ARU’s approach. Around 85% of our students share at least one characteristic of disadvantage, reflecting our strong focus on supporting underrepresented groups. Uniquely, 17% of our students come from regions with the lowest participation in higher education, compared to a national average of 12%.

Across research, education, student support and community partnerships, we're committed to tackling poverty and inequality in all its forms, contributing to more inclusive and resilient communities locally, nationally and globally.

Research

Our researchers work with communities, charities, public authorities and policymakers to investigate both the causes and consequences of poverty and disadvantage, with a strong emphasis on translating evidence into fairer policy and practice.

Learning and teaching

We equip students with the knowledge and skills to address poverty, inequality and social exclusion through an interdisciplinary, practice-based approach to teaching and learning.

Operations

We provide targeted financial and pastoral support to ensure that students from disadvantaged backgrounds are able to access higher education and thrive during their studies.

Partnerships, impact and outreach

With a strong commitment to tackling poverty, exclusion and inequality in our region, we work with disadvantaged groups, businesses, policy makers and community groups across the East of England.
