It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Roger Buckley.
Roger was one of the founders of the Vision and Eye Research Unit (subsequently Institute) at Anglia Ruskin University and had the position of Professor of Ocular Medicine here for many years before retiring from his university work a few years ago.
He will be remembered as a kind and interested member of staff, involved in supervision of several doctoral students, particularly in the areas of the cornea, conjunctiva and ocular allergy.
Bridging both ophthalmology and optometry fields was a balancing act that Roger did expertly, leading to multiple collaborations and important advances in both professions, for example in advancing independent prescribing and contact lens technology.
He came across as a very unassuming and interested colleague despite a prodigious intellect in academia which extended well beyond medicine into music and the arts. His wise counsel and support at all levels inside and outside of the University will be much missed.
