Gain the skills to teach or coach people – and have a lasting impact on their physical and mental wellbeing – with our BSc (Hons) Health and Physical Literacy at ARU in Writtle.

If you’re interested in teaching, sports coaching or health coaching, this is the course for you.

It focuses on physical literacy, which encourages lifelong health and wellbeing through physical activity. As a student at ARU Writtle you’ll gain practical experience through work placements, and an appreciation of the holistic development of children and adolescents.

The built-in work-based learning modules, and additional vocational qualifications (UKSCA and Parkour Generations), are all designed to increase your employability when you graduate.

Campus facilities and student support

Join a course in Writtle and:

  • study on a beautiful campus in the Essex countryside
  • learn from experienced tutors, who'll provide encouragement and feedback
  • make full use of facilities including extensive library and IT resources
  • access support, should you need it, with study skills, careers advice, health and wellbeing, and more
  • enjoy social spaces including a restaurant, coffee shop and recreation centre.


Graduates of our BSc (Hons) Health and Physical Literacy degree have found employment in a number of fields, including sport coaching and health coaching.

The course can also prepare you for a career as a PE teacher (following postgraduate teacher training), physiotherapist, or occupational therapist.

Graduation doesn't have to be the end of your time with us. You might decide to at ARU and study for a Masters, such as our MSc Sport, Exercise and Nutrition.
