Mill Road Winter Fair 2022

Mill Road Winter Fair is a celebration of community along one of the most diverse and vibrant roads in Cambridge. The Fair brings together local businesses and organisations, shops and stallholders, musicians, artists and dancers in one day of festival joy.

This year, we're proud to partner with Cambridge Film Trust to host a series of film screenings in our Covent Garden Drama studio, off Mill Road. There will be films for all ages, classics and new releases as well as series of short films by students on the Digital Media Production degree at ARU.

Documentary Screening ‘The Oil Machine’ (PG) Emma Davis, 82mins, 2022

New documentary The Oil Machine, directed by Emma Davie (Becoming Animal, I Am Breathing) and produced by Sonja Henrici (Merkel, Time Trial), was released in UK cinemas and community venues throughout November 2022 and beyond, coinciding with this year’s COP27 climate conference, and implementing an impact campaign that promotes urgent and critical discussion.

The Oil Machine explores our economic, historical and emotional entanglement with fossil fuels by looking at the conflicting imperatives around North Sea oil and gas. This invisible machine at the core of our economy and society now faces an uncertain future as activists and investors demand change. Is this the end of oil?

‘Remembering Cinema Projectionism’ - Sarah Wood, 12min

Projectionism, a new film by artist filmmaker Sarah Wood created specifically for The Cinema of Ideas and enabled by the East Anglian Film Archive, who generously shared the wealth of their materials. The film was made in response to an open call for cinema memories from the cinema workers, makers and thinkers who keep film culture alive and well despite the challenges of the times. This project was an experiment in collaboration for a time of separation.

Le Mepris - (15) Jean-Luc Godard, 103 mins, 1963

Working with his biggest budget to date, Jean-Luc Godard created a sublime widescreen drama about marital breakdown, set during pre-production on a film shoot. Starring Bridget Bardot, Jack Palance and Fritz Lang, shot in eye-popping Technicolor and adapted from a novel by Alberto Moravia, the film plots a screenwriter’s suddenly fractious marital relations during filming in Italy of a production of Homer’s The Odyssey. Sight & Sound critic Colin MacCabe referred to the film as "the greatest work of art produced in post-war Europe."
