The BirdTrek Adventure aims to promote environmental awareness and outdoor education through an engaging, family-friendly orienteering activity focussing on the birds on campus and the use of artificial intelligence to identify and record them. Participants will navigate a designated course, solve ecological puzzles and complete challenges to find hidden clues, all while learning about local ecosystems and sustainability. If they successfully complete all the challenges, then they may win a prize. During the activity brief, participants will be introduced to two apps (available on both iPhone and Android – Merlin and iRecord) that will help the user to identify animal and plant species using the latest AI technology. Once a species has been identified, these records can be submitted through the app to specialist regional verifiers and national datasets, bringing citizen science to their fingertips!

The event is being held over two days with timed slots for entry. Visitors can then take as long as they like to complete the course.

Please note the course is accessible as it follows a public footpath through the Writtle campus with the opportunity to go off the path to discover more. Please bring wellies and dress accordingly.

Safety Notes: the course may have areas of uneven & slippery ground. at that time of year. If leaving the path, there maybe fallen branches, vegetation at eye height and foot-catching undergrowth at low level. There is a resevoir in an enclosed field which is gated and signposted. Courses are designed to avoid the need for a close approach. A responsible adult should assess their group’s needs and abilities prior to attempting the courses.
