Following on from the Netflix series 'Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones', Professor Justin Roberts and Dr Mark Cortnage delve deeper into the secrets of the Blue Zones diet, and lessons from the oldest people on Earth, and critique the feasibility of reaching a century and whether simple nutrition and lifestyle changes can really increase our life expectancy. 

This event will have interactive elements and will include opportunities for the audience to participate in polls and quizzes. 

About our speakers 

Dr Mark Cortnage

Mark is a Senior Lecturer in public health at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. Mark is a public health nutritionist focussing on engagement with hard-to-reach populations to support long-term lifestyle adaptation. Mark has dedicated over two decades designing and providing local authority commissioned programmes including The Alpha programme and Shift the Timber. Novel programmes that introduced men and women to regular, coached exercise whilst providing tailored dietary support to induce weight loss and sustainable management. 

Mark’s research focuses on nutritional strategies to reduce lifestyle-associated risk and subsequently improvement in longevity. In addition, Mark has a keen interest in the public’s perception of diets and helping us make informed dietary choices to support improvements in well-being and longevity. 

Professor Justin Roberts 

Justin is a Professor of Nutritional Physiology applied to exercise and functional health within the Cambridge Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. He is a BANT Registered Nutritionist (British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine), current Editor-in-Chief for the Nutrition Evidence Database (NED), and Chair of the Nutritional Therapy Education Commission (NTEC). He is also the current Senior Team Lead for Muscle, Performance and Recovery research within Medical and Nutritional Sciences for Danone Nutricia Research, NL.

His research focuses on nutritional strategies to promote fat oxidation, metabolic flexibility and adaptive recovery in relation to exercise, including polyphenol phytonutrients and protein-targeted approaches. He has a current interest in ‘calorie-restriction-mimetic’ nutrients which may support active ageing and longevity and has been actively inspired by the Blue Zones Diet and nutritional strategies to enhance functional longevity.
