Introducing Interdisciplinary Modules in Higher Education
Introducing Interdisciplinary Modules in Higher Education: Enhancing Sustainability and Student Employability is a new book published by Routledge, a celebration of ARU’s Ruskin Modules, our award-winning interdisciplinary programme.
Now in their fourth year, Ruskin Modules started as an ambitious idea which has grown into transformative learning experiences that challenge both students and module leaders to think beyond disciplinary boundaries and engage with real-world problems in innovative ways.
This new book features chapters from Ruskin Module leaders, who share insights, lessons learned, and the power of interdisciplinary education with a wider audience. It was co-edited by Anglia Learning and Teaching’s Simon Pratt-Adams, Mark Warnes and Elaine Brown.
The content of Ruskin Modules is informed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Each module employs active learning pedagogies, encouraging interdisciplinary student teams to collaborate on developing sustainable solutions, allowing for the growth of essential skills for enhancing student employability.
The theoretical underpinnings of the discussions in each chapter open up questions relating to contemporary issues such as diversity and representation, poverty and sustainability, artificial intelligence, and social justice.

Next month Elaine, who is Institutional Lead for Ruskin Modules, will be the keynote at the 2025 Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching Conference. Elaine will be raising the profiles of our VC award-winning Ruskin Module leaders as ‘visionaries, risk-takers, and quiet revolutionaries’ in ‘The Hero’s Curriculum: Born from Rebellion, Built on Purpose’. She will also be presenting a session at the conference next month: ‘Mapping unchartered territory: rubrics cubed’ with ARU’s Deborah Caws, Academic Developer - Ruskin Modules.
