International Cultural Competence Lightbulb

Increase your awareness of cultural understanding and culture shock experienced by international nurses and students at our UnLearning Lightbulb session with Nursing Senior Lecturer Patience Bamisaye.

Research has shown that internationally educated nurses (IENs) and students from different countries experience almost the same communication issues and culture shock. There is also a concerning mismatch between their expectations and experience in England.

Research has also highlighted the importance of preparing managers, mentors, and lecturers to facilitate adequate adaptation through cultural awareness, knowledge, and sensitivity.

This session will help you:

• Understand the elements contributing to culture shock among international students in UK universities and nurses in the UK healthcare sector.
• Understand some strategies to support international students and nurses.
• Identify areas where managers, mentors, and lecturers can make adjustments to support international students, staff, and nurses better.

Patience Bamisaye is an IEN who was once an international student at ARU and is now a Senior Lecturer managing the International Nursing top-up course at ARU, also an accredited RCN Learning Rep.
