This module will introduce you to the diverse fields of nursing and midwifery and provide you an essential foundation for further study in healthcare. You will explore the roles, values, and expectations of nurses and midwives as outlined by the NMC Code, and develop an understanding of the delivery of healthcare across the life course. Through discussions of real-world contexts, safeguarding, and public health, you will begin to appreciate the breadth of care and settings in which nurses and midwives work. The module also supports you to develop academic writing, critical thinking, and reflective practice, preparing you for the demands of Level 4 study. This module will provide you with an opportunity to apply theory and develop skills of professional practice, as well as provide an opportunity to develop written and verbal communication skills in line with the requirements of the health and social care professional and regulatory bodies, and an introduction to pharmacology, drug calculation and data use in healthcare. There will also be opportunities for you to develop interpersonal skills in preparation for a career within health and social care services, and improve your presentation and interview techniques.
View the full module definitionThis module will develop the knowledge, skills and competencies that will prepare you for our portfolio of Life Sciences undergraduate programmes. You will be introduced to key ideas across several areas of life sciences and learn to apply your knowledge of Biology, Chemistry, physics, and Mathematics as you perform practical skills in laboratory sessions, problem solve, collect, analyse and report scientific data. We will build on what you already know, working with you to find and upskill any key areas. Ultimately, you will have to begin your journey toward being an independent learner, but here, the emphasis will be on supporting you to understand the key issues and how to solve them.
View the full module definitionThis module will enable you to learn a set of important skills and competencies needed to progress to level 4 of an undergraduate degree. On the successful completion of this module, you will have developed, as a minimum, the literacies expected of an undergraduate student. These literacies include Independent Learning, Digital, Academic, Information, Creative, Social, Emotional and Assessment. The module will consist of several ‘taster’ subject specialist sessions early in trimester 1 (for Business & Law, Engineering & Computing, Built & Natural environment, Health, and Science), as well as sessions focused on employability, professional bodies/membership, and career pathways. The module assessments will include individual and group projects, which will enable you to apply the knowledge and skills you have gained during your first year of study. You also will be encouraged to reflect on your own learning and development throughout the module.
