After an introduction to physiotherapy, we’ll prepare you for your practice placement. Together, we’ll cover applied anatomy, using case-based scenarios to illustrate the clinical application. We’ll explore psychology and sociology relating to physio, as well as giving you the skills for working in practice, such as manual handling, basic life support, infection control and assessment skills. Working collaboratively with students from other Allied Health courses, you’ll be taught interprofessional values, working with service users, as well as an understanding of the legal ethical and professional frameworks.
We’ll develop your ability to undertake safe and effective physiotherapy assessment and management of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. In our study of MSK (musculoskeletal), we’ll cover injury, evidence-based diagnosis by joint (ankle, hip, shoulder, elbow, wrist and spine). With neurorehabiliation, we’ll introduce you to neurological tissue damage, neuroplasticity, and mechanisms of (spontaneous) regeneration. You’ll consider red flags, risk factors and mental health.
Advance your expertise to carry out safe and effective physiotherapy assessment and management of cardiorespiratory, vascular and mental health conditions. You’ll consider epidemiology, pathogenesis, risk factors and clinical presentations of common cardiovascular and respiratory pathologies. You’ll explore prevention, education and the role of exercise, as well as skills and techniques for managing conditions. We’ll use practical skilled based sessions, lectures, case-based scenarios, and involvement with service users. Allowing you to critically understand cardiorespiratory, vascular and mental health conditions using biopsychosocial approaches employed in physiotherapy care.
We’ll develop your ability to critically evaluate evidence and apply evidence-based practice in health care. We’ll use group-based activities and discussion alongside a journal club. You’ll match study designs with clinical questions, learn how to locate evidence, critically appraise and evaluate evidence using clinical expertise and patient preference.
Develop your awareness of contemporary practice issues and evaluate the current evidence base surrounding these issues and enabling you to collaborate with health professionals to operate effectively in complex and/or unpredictable areas of practice. You’ll improve your ability to prioritise practice issues and their management, form safe and effective relationships and clinical leadership skills. We’ll use workshops and group discussions to further your understanding, and develop your emotional intelligence, resilience, and creativity.
Providing you with the opportunity to synthesise knowledge you have gained from previous modules in your master’s degree to develop, plan, and undertake a quality improvement project within healthcare. We’ll use real-practice examples, of quality improvement in healthcare and lectures. You’ll critically evaluate health service provision, to create and implement a model for improvement, and reflect on the project process and outcomes to develop your model further. We’ll support you to measure the effectiveness of your plan with outcomes, processes, and data analysis.
