Critically explore change theory in relation to your own field of practice and demonstrate understanding of the theoretical and philosophical components of organisational transformation. The module encourages the synthesis of strategic discourse with operational application as modes of organisational structures thereby forming strong links between theory and practice. You’ll be expected to demonstrate an ability to isolate and focus on the significant features of problems and to offer synthetic and coherent solutions. It is expected that you will produce original or innovative work relating to your specialism that is worthy of publication, public performance or display.

It consists of four elements: effective decision making, adoption of a global approach, creation of a new business paradigm and a contemporary mission. The module also considers the related concept of 'MisLeadership', which looks at how leaders have often failed to achieve the optimum outcomes for those they lead. Students will learn about leadership styles, emotional intelligence and will have the chance to learn about their own leadership traits and styles. Leaders predominantly create context and this module will explore the skills required to successfully mould and develop the context in a complex evolving environment. Learning will be supported by the use of discussion boards as well as telephone, Skype and other means of communication with students.

The demands of modern healthcare systems require the development of roles for confident autonomous organisational practitioners, who possess the knowledge and skills to implement complex decisions in a rapidly changing health sector environment and to play key roles in service development. This is particularly important in advanced organisational practice and you will be encouraged to focus on new or advanced areas of service developments and consider issues such as ethics, legislation and quality assurance. You will need to be able to utilise both strategic and operational decision making skills within an area of advanced organisational development and/or practice and to develop strategies to facilitate the implementation of the outcomes of the decision making process, either as an individual or within a team/organisational context.
View the full module definitionDisasters (e.g. floods and earthquakes), pandemics (e.g. COVID-19), major emergencies and many other situations and events cause disruptions to the operation of health and social care. These disruptions often reduce effectiveness and threatens health and social care continuity. Health and social care services are highly dependent on interdisciplinary set of parameters such as infrastructure, management and human resources all of which are essential for the continuity of these critical services and demonstrate the complexity of these services. We’ll equip you to assess and improve the resilience of your organisation. Responding to communities’ need for more effective and less interruptive health and social care services, by integrating resilience in the way the organisation operates. You’ll reflect on this complexity and the interdisciplinary nature of these services whether you are from medical, paramedical, military, engineering, or other backgrounds. You’ll specifically develop broad and detailed knowledge about the components of risks, disaster typologies, vulnerability assessment, emergency complexities and disaster response phases. We’ll provide a framework, which’ll allow you to recognise the need for resilience, and to demonstrate capability to assess and address at least one of its key parameters that has the potential to affect the continuity of health or social care service.
This module is designed to give you the tools you need to identify and plan research to address a real-world problem within your practice, or address a gap in the existing knowledge within your field. It's designed for participants from the School of Medicine and School of Allied Health which is reflected in the diverse content including: evaluating literature, designing research questions, systematic review procedures, qualitative and quantitative research methods and data analysis, issues of rigour and ethical considerations in research. The aim of the module is to provide a framework which will allow you to propose and justify a research question and design appropriate to your professional practice.

This project provides the opportunity for you to demonstrate: the ability to raise significant and meaningful questions in relation to your specialism; depth of knowledge which may involve working at current limits of theoretical and/or research understanding; critical understanding of research methods and its relationship to knowledge; awareness of and ability to develop solutions to ethical dilemmas likely to arise in their research or professional practice; the ability to draw meaningful and justifiable conclusions from information which may be complex or contradictory; the capability to expand or redefine existing knowledge to develop new approaches to changing situations and contribute to the development to best practice; the ability to communicate these processes in a clear and sophisticated fashion; and the capability to evaluate your work from the perspective of an autonomous reflective learner.
