Management Theory (15 credits)

This module is designed to facilitate each student's development of their own individual knowledge base and approach to management. Its aim is to get students to develop their own particular approach to management by establishing a solid foundation of management knowledge and integrating this with their own values, experiences and goals, to provide the basis for a life-long development of their management skills. It is based on a thorough understanding of the theories and practice of management, reinforced by examples of best practice drawn from a wide range of organisations, together with an appreciation of the context and constraints that influence organisations and management. The module will consider the main activities of management from an integrating perspective, together with identifying and developing the qualities required for a successful manager, including leadership. Organisations form the focus of management, consequently the module will develop a sound understanding of the functions, forms, operation and behaviour of organisations in a variety of contexts and situations, together with an appreciation of how all aspects of management are integrated in the management of organisations. Students will examine and critically evaluate examples of good management and bad management, with regard to developing workable solutions that can be applied to management situations and to facilitate the application of management principles and practice to their own field of work.

Management Practice (15 credits)

This module recognises the importance of people to the success of organisations and that organisational performance is largely dependent on the performance of its human resources, which in turn is determined by the quality and effectiveness of their management. This module is designed to enable each student to develop their own individual knowledge base and approach to effectively manage human resources, by establishing a solid foundation of human resource management knowledge and integrating this with your own values, experiences and goals to provide the basis for the life-long development of management skills. It is based on a thorough understanding of the theories, principles and practice of human resource management together with critical evaluation of examples of human resource management from a wide variety of situations. The module emphasises the development of the personal skills and traits required to successfully manage human resources, together with effective knowledge management to maximise their success in a knowledge-based economy.

Project Planning and Control (15 credits)

This module is designed to enable you to develop a systematic understanding of the principles, practices and systems used to plan and control projects. It is designed to provide a critical insight into the use of integrated planning and programming software programs when used together with Project Management Information Systems (PMIS) to provide effective management of all aspects of a project, including resources, time and cost. We will encourage you to develop a proactive approach to the planning and management of projects, with the integrated project management programme providing the key management tool and source of useable management information.

Research Design and Methods (15 credits)

Gain an in-depth understanding of the theories and methods of research and research design and develop a theoretical and practical foundation in research for your major project/dissertation. You will get an understanding of a range of approaches to research, including quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods, together with an understanding of a number of specific research methods. You will develop your knowledge of research design in order to critically consider the design for your research project, including preparing your proposal and considering ethics and ethical issues. You will develop a theoretical and practical foundation from which to develop your Masters Level Major Project/Dissertation.

Economic, Legal and Political Framework

Firms in the built environment are very dependent on the external environment and this module enables students to understand and analyse these complex relationships and the impact they have on firms. This module is designed to give you an appreciation of the influence of economic, political and legal influences so that you are able to develop on appreciation of the complex inter-relationships involved and synthesise these. Topics covered equip you with a theoretical base which you will then be able to apply to current events through own research and debates. The module is assessed by a written assignment and an exam so you can demonstrate a critical understanding of the concepts and theories and their applications.

Sustainability and Environmental Management

Here, you will look at wider developments in environmental protection and how these affect construction, as well as how construction affects them. You will also examine the demands that greater environmental awareness places on the built environment.

Procurement and Supply Chain Management

You will gain an in-depth consideration of the principles and practices of procurement across a wide range of different approaches and situations, including direct and integrated approaches such as supply chain management and partnering.

Structural Adaptation and Re-use of Buildings

You'll develop a detailed understanding of the engineering aspects of building adaptation and re-use, including a consideration of the benefits that the approach can deliver in terms of reductions in energy and resource consumption. You'll also consider a range of structural implications, including the assessment of existing buildings, changes in loading requirements and related structural calculations, durability, degradation and testing of construction materials and structural adaptations, strengthening methods and temporary works.

Dissertation (60 credits)

This module supports you in the preparation and submission of a Master's stage project, dissertation or artefact. The module provides the opportunity for you to select and explore in-depth, a topic that is of interest and relevant to your course in which you can develop a significant level of expertise. It enables you to; - Demonstrate your ability to generate significant and meaningful questions in relation to their specialism - Undertake independent research using appropriate, recognised methods based on current theoretical research knowledge; critically understand method and its relationship to knowledge - Develop a critical understanding of current knowledge in relation to your chosen subject and to critically analyse and evaluate information and data, which may be complex or contradictory, and draw meaningful and justifiable conclusions. -Develop the capability to expand or redefine existing knowledge; to develop new approaches to changing situations and/or develop new approaches to changing situations and contribute to the development of best practice. - Demonstrate an awareness of and to develop solutions to ethical dilemmas likely to arise in your research or professional practice - Communicate these processes in a clear and elegant fashion - Evaluate your work from the perspective of an autonomous reflective learner.
